|
|
Hi All
I arrived with my parents at Smithfield Hostel on 19 December 1968 after disembarking the Fairstar in Melbourne and travelling by some antique train from Melbourne.
What memories even though I was 15 and what a difference to the little country village in Yorkshire .
I will get to the local library and look through the old photo's and see if I can obtain some of the hostel which I will upload.
I only spent a couple of years total in S.A. till 1999 then ended up coming back to settle here just a couple of miles from Smithfield where it all started. |

Hi KB3500, it seems that with Smithfield hostel being so small we don't have a lot of members who had the "pleasure" of passing through it.
I am not a migrant, but I have a great interest in migrants in SA as they were a big part of my childhood growing up in Angaston SA where the cement works employed many.
I have cleaned up a drawing showing the layout of the Hostel and you can see it at: http://www.migrantweb.com/hostelsforum/viewtopic.php?t=860
You can also see June's photos at: http://www.migrantweb.com/hostelsforum/viewtopic.php?t=861 |

Hello Ruby Red, Thankyou for freshening up this thread. You can see June's photos herehttp://www.migrantweb.com/hostelsforum/viewtopic.php?t=861
She and her family were there perhaps a little earlier than you, but no doubt the hostel had not changed much. |

We where there from October 8th 1969 for about seven months.
Going from the hostel and up into the "hills" without water wasn't a good idea in summer,
Moved to Elizabeth Fields until I was eighteen and have lived in every state since. |
